Rumour Mongering: Galatasaray Target Marko Grujic

The Super Lig side are said to want Grujic on loan, but Turkish transfer rumours should be treated with skepticism.

With Marko Grujic’s loan move to Cardiff City falling through late last week, it was always likely a new potential destination would pop up for the promising 22-year-old who looks unlikely to see the pitch with regularity if he remains with Liverpool this season.

The week’s first potential destination is, perhaps not surprisingly, Galatasaray, with reports out of Turkey linking the player with a season-long loan to the Champions League side who have made a new midfield signing before the start of the season a top priority.

This isn’t the first tie Grujic has been linked with Galatasaray this summer, but with Liverpool preferring to keep the player close to home with a side in the Premier League the early links with a move to Turkey faded. Now, with Cardiff out of the picture, they’re back.

Of course, it should be noted that it sometimes seems as though the Turkish press link any and any plausibly available player with a move to one of the top Super Lig sides—in addition to Grujic, Daniel Sturridge and Gini Wijnaldum have both been linked this summer.

And while having three players regularly linked with a move to Turkey feels about par for the summer transfer window course, the last time a Liverpool player actually made the switch was when Lazar Markovic headed Fenerbahçe back in the summer of 2015.

Which is to say the chances are probably against Grujic ending up there this season. Still, regular minutes for a side in the Champions League wouldn’t be the worst thing for the player this season—and, realistically, Grujic does need to go somewhere.

At Liverpool, currently, Grujic has at least six and as many as eight players ahead of him for three positions in midfield, and he’s at a stage in his career where he needs to be starting every week—at Galatasaray or somewhere else—in order to develop.
