Crouch: Liverpool biggest threat to City

Liverpool will be Manchester City’s closest challengers this season after doing the most impressive business of any Premier League side this summer, according to ex-Red Peter Crouch.

The Reds are eyeing a title challenge after adding Alisson, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri to their ranks for a combined fee of nearly £175million.

Crouch reckons Liverpool have addressed two important weaknesses and stressed that keeping hold of 44-goal forward Mohamed Salah, who signed a new contract at the beginning of July, was also critical.

“My old club have had the most impressive summer in terms of transfer business and friendly results have been encouraging,” Crouch, who made 134 appearances for LFC, wrote in a season preview for the Mail. “The build-up to the season has been smooth.

“It’s going to be interesting watching Naby Keita in midfield. Stoke played RB Leipzig in a friendly this time last year. We won 2-1 but I came away thinking what a good player he was, so fast and dynamic. Liverpool needed something extra in midfield and he will give it to them.

“Keeping Mohamed Salah was critical and if he scores even half of the goals he managed last season, they are going to win lots of games.

“The addition of Alisson was expensive but they needed to address the goalkeeping position.

“If it clicks for Liverpool, they will be the team that comes closest to stopping Manchester City. They have been so exciting to watch and I can see it continuing.

“I know what it would mean to their fans if they went all the way.”

Liverpool have a significant gap to bridge if they are to overhaul Pep Guardiola’s side, who won the title by a whopping 19 points last season.
