Adam Lewis Determined to Force His Way into Liverpool’s First Team Picture

The local left-back believes he can see his path to the first team at Liverpool.

Having watched Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez push their way into the first team picture last season then seeing more promising youngsters putting their names into the mix in pre-season this year, U23 left back Adam Lewis wants to be next.

The local youngster impressed last season with the U18s and earned a promotion to Neil Critchley’s U23s for 2018-19, but the 18-year-old has his eyes on the first team and wants to prove he should be involved at that level sooner rather than later.

“I watched them in pre-season,” he said when asked about current U23 teammates Curtis Jones and Rafael Camacho, who both impressed fans and Liverpool’s coaching staff with a number of strong pre-season performances this past summer.

“Curt played some of the best football I have seen him play,” Lewis continued. “He’s got to keep it going and make sure he keeps doing it because if he does he will get his chance, he has a lot of ability, the same with Rafa as well.

“Nat Phillips has also made the step up and with Ragnar Klavan leaving the club you never know what can happen. Seeing the likes of Curt, Rafa, [and] Nat going up to Melwood makes me think, wow, because our manager loves the youth players.”

More than Jürgen Klopp’s willingness to give youth a chance, Lewis thinks he sees a path to the first team at his favoured left back position because there are just two senior left backs, Andy Robertson and Alberto Moreno, ahead of him on the depth chart.

“As long as you have the ability and you can run then 100 per cent, he will give you a chance,” Lewis added. “Looking at the first team, there are obviously two left-backs ahead of me so that makes me determined to be a left-back.”
