Klopp almost missed out on Robertson in favour of Ben Chilwell.
Jurgen Klopp almost passed up on left-back Andy Robertson in favour of another player, reports today are claiming.
Robertson, named permanent Scotland captain last week, has been one of the bargain buys of the last few seasons after joining the Reds for £8million from Hull in 2017. The young Scot was brought in as competition for Alberto Moreno and went on to claim the left-back spot as his own throughout last season.
The Echo report, however, that Klopp had his eye on another defender before signing Robertson – Leicester’s Ben Chilwell.
The Reds tracked Chilwell during his loan spell with Huddersfield where he went from strength to strength under David Wagner, a close friend of Klopp.
Liverpool went on to bid £5million plus add-ons for Chilwell, but Leicester ultimately priced them out of a move. Klopp spent the remainder of the 2016/17 season rotating James Milner and Moreno at left-back.

Klopp mentioned Chilwell before this season’s Leicester clash.
“It will be really, really tough,” he said of Leicester.
“They play really confident football.
“The midfield is really strong, the defensive line has played together for a while, Chilwell is a massive player for them with a great future, it looks like he is a really big talent.
“That all makes it special.”
Liverpool will look back with no regrets, however, as Robertson has gone on to become one of the top left-backs in the Premier League and shows no sign of slowing down in his development.
