Milner: Klopp can ‘lose it’ even when things are going well

James Milner has revealed that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp unleashes his ‘fiery side’ in the dressing room even when the squad least expect it.

Klopp is visibly affectionate with his players at the full-time whistle when they win games, but he can often be seen apoplectic with rage on the sidelines when they struggle.

Milner says the unique German often surprises his squad with the timing of his tirades.

“He’s a very good manager,” Milner told FourFourTwo magazine. “You can see that by looking at what he’s done with this team; how we play together and work for each other. He’s got the fiery side but also the ‘Klopp hug’, as I think it’s known.

“A few times, he has lost his head when we haven’t played well, but he’ll surprise you: there are times when things aren’t going badly and he still loses it, and times when you think he’s going to, but he doesn’t.

“He’s the judge of that and he normally gets it spot on. He loves the game and wants to win.”

Klopp is aiming to win his first silverware at the club in his third full season at the helm after near misses in the League Cup, Europa League and Champions League.

Milner is confident that the German has assembled a side capable of ending Liverpool’s domestic title drought but acknowledges that ‘talk is cheap’.

Asked whether Liverpool could go onto win the Premier League after impressively reaching the Champions League final, Milner replied: “Cup competitions are different to Premier League football, but over the last two seasons I think we’ve become more consistent.

“We’ve shown that we can beat all types of teams now – the teams at the top; the so-called lesser teams; the teams who come and park the bus.

“The tools are there for us to do it – it’s just about doing it over 38 games. That’s why it’s so difficult, because you have to do it every single week. We’ve shown that we can do it, but talk is cheap – it’s all about going and doing it.”
