Paul Merson heaps praise on Joe Gomez

Former professional footballer Paul Merson has been very impressed with the way Joe Gomez has started the season.

Dejan Lovren coming back late from the World Cup, and then the injury he sustained on top of that, has seen the young Englishman play at centre-back next to Virgil van Dijk to begin the 2018-19 Premier League season.

The way Gomez has started, Lovren has a fight to get back into Jurgen Klopp’s preferred XI, and Merson believes the balance of the side is better with Gomez starting in the heart of the defence.

Merson told Sky Sports: “Of course we all talk about Van Dijk, just how dominant he is and that a lot of their attacks are off the back of him winning that first contact.

“Gomez being alongside him; what a player for him to learn from. He’s raw, but has out-and-out pace.

“I’m so impressed with Gomez, the balance of the team is so much better now, with so much pace, they can defend one-versus-one, because at times they are going to have to.”
