Roy Evans encouraged by nature of Liverpool wins

Former Liverpool manager Roy Evans believes the Reds’ ability to win games without playing at their best is a good sign of things to come this season.

Liverpool kicked off the 2018-19 campaign with a resounding 4-0 against West Ham at Anfield, but since then have had to labour to victories against Crystal Palace, Brighton and Leicester. Nevertheless, Jurgen Klopp’s men currently occupy top spot in the league as the international break draws to a close.

Evans, who managed the Reds from 1994 – 1998, has been buoyed by the nature of those hard-fought wins against the type of defensive-minded teams Liverpool may have struggled to break down last season.

“So far this season it has been win, win, win – which is brilliant,” Evans told Liverpoolfc.com

“We’re not playing at our very best, JĂĽrgen has admitted that and I agree. We have not been brilliant but we’ve been a lot more compact.

“To win games on the days you don’t play so well, that’s a hint of saying you have a chance to win the Premier League because when we play well, which is most of the time, we win.

And if we can add the results of the odd bad day to it, you’re going to be pretty close.”

Liverpool return to Premier League action on Saturday lunchtime when Klopp’s men take on Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley in what is sure to be a more open clash.
