What do Liverpool stand to earn from being in the Champions League?

Liverpool are guaranteed just under £35million for taking part in this season’s Champions League competition, irrespective of how far they progress.

Jurgen Klopp’s team pocketed almost £70million following a fantastic run in the competition last season that saw them reach the final in Kiev on May 26, and UEFA have offered to increase the reward for teams reaching the latter stages of this season’s tournament by 38%.

Overall, £1.82billion will be shared out amongst the teams participating in the Champions League and UEFA Super Cup this season. Under new tournament rules for this season, Liverpool have already earned £13.64million for reaching the group stages.

The Reds also stand to gain a further £20.75million based on their 12th-placed spot in UEFA’s coefficient ranking system, guaranteeing them at least £34.39million before a ball is kicked. The Echo reports that:

“The new initiative primarily takes the place of the market pool, which has seen its prize fund reduced from 507m euros to 292m euros.

The market pool share – calculated according to the proportional value of each television market – is split into two halves.

The first sees the Premier League champions take home roughly 40% of the share, second place 30%, third 20% and fourth 10%. The second is based on number of games played in the Champions League that season.

With Liverpool finishing fourth this season, it’s a shortfall they’ll again encounter this campaign, although to a much lesser degree given the decreased market pool share.”

Liverpool would also stand to gain a further £2.42million for each group stage win or £805,000 for a draw. Being knocked out of the competition is rewarded by sums of €9.5million (round of 16), €10.5million (quarter-finals), €12million (semi-finals) and €15million (runners-up), with the winning team taking home €19million.
