Sadio Mane undergoes surgery for broken thumb

Sadio Mane has undergone an operation on his broken thumb and may not be available for Saturday’s trip to Huddersfield, according to reports.

The first metacarpal on Mane’s left hand was worked on during the procedure, and the winger is now recovering.

Mane suffered the injury in training for Senegal ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with Sudan during the week.

Liverpool released a statement which simply said: “The surgery, conducted at a north-west hospital and supervised by club medics, was successful.”

The news that Mane may not make Saturday’s match comes as yet another disappointment for Jurgen Klopp as he seeks to piece together his side for the Huddersfield game.

Naby Keita is out with a hamstring problem, while Mohamed Salah, James Milner and Virgil van Dijk are all available but just returned from injury.

It’s now likely that Xherdan Shaqiri will start the match on Saturday, while Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana are also in the running. It may also be time for Fabinho to start getting more game time for the Reds.
