Joel Matip suffers broken collarbone and is set for six weeks out

Joel Matip

After being sent to hospital after Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Napoli on Tuesday, Joel Matip is set for six weeks out as he requires surgery on a broken collarbone.

The Reds were resolute in defence at Anfield, something that has been missing on the road during the current Champions League campaign. One that hasn’t been in doubt over the last 18 months, however, has been Liverpool’s defensive form at home domestically and in Europe.

After Joe Gomez was ruled out with a leg fracture after being clattered by Ben Mee at Turf Moor, Matip stepped up and delivered three top quality performances at centre back but will now miss as many as six weeks on the sideline.

A statement on Liverpool’s official website reads: “Joel Matip is set to undergo surgery after suffering a fractured collarbone during Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Napoli on Tuesday night.

“Matip was taken to hospital following the fixture and further assessment deemed an operation is required.

“Early indications suggest the centre-back is facing a spell of up to six weeks out of action, though that is dependent on how Matip responds to his treatment and rehabilitation programmes.”
