Jürgen Klopp Reacts to Manchester United Manager’s Grumbling

Jose Mourinho is a silly man. Doot do do.

Jose Mourinho seems to have launched some thinly veiled insults Jürgen Klopp’s way ahead Manchester United’s trip to Anfield on Sunday. Unfortunately, Jose got tangled up in his own blathering about desire and potential and potential desire and potential and he kept saying potential.

Mourinho’s beef with Klopp seems to be that Liverpool are playing well right now and Mourinho’s team doesn’t like him very much. So, he’s got the microphones in front of him and he knows that the journalists want some juicy bits for their articles about the big, ol’ match this weekend and decides to get a dig in about the Klopp’s lack of trophies at Liverpool.

“I think trophies matter, yeah,” is the line most are latching onto from Mourinho’s grumblings. But the implication as the statement continues is that Klopp or any manager who is currently experiencing more success than poor Jose, should either win silverware or shut up and admit you don’t have the potential to win silverware.

“Do I have to? Do I have to win it?” Klopp responded.

“People might remember that, but what I have to do is make the best of the things the club is offering me – that is what I believe in.

“If people say the Champions League campaign last season was not a success because we didn’t win the final then I cannot change that. Was it the successful finish? No, but the ride was brilliant.

“I enjoyed it a lot. Going to the final was fantastic but in life – in all departments of life including your job – if only the best counts and effort doesn’t count then life is shit.

“You can do whatever you want but if I’m not as smart as Einstein or whatever, I can’t try a little bit? I will never be him.

“I love the challenge. Make the best of it. That is how I understand life, I learned it a little bit in football. In the end other people have to judge that.”

Mourinho is clinging to his mind games as a tired and desperate attempt to spare his ego the reality of his situation at United. His team should be performing better, but they are not. His star players should be winning him games, but they are not. Everybody should revere him, but they don’t.

Liverpool were in the Champions League final last season and now a have themselves a first-place perch in the Premier League. It’s felt far too slow of a climb at times but the pinnacles of football are now in sight. Somehow I doubt that will be enough to silence the Special One.
