Jürgen Klopp Warns of Judging Manchester United by Their Points

Ahead of “The English El Clasico,” Klopp warns of underestimating the quality of players in Jose Mourinho’s team.

There’s a a fun name for any match between Liverpool and Manchester United. If you call it “The English El Clasico” you may be surprised at how many new friends you will make. Note: Nearly all of these new friends will be connoisseurs of phrases like “the Belarusian Messi.”

The biggest match in England happens on Sunday when Jose Mourinho’s side visit Anfield. Jürgen Klopp now has first-hand experience of these heated match-ups with United but the highly charged fixture grabbed his attention long ago in Germany.

“Being part of that game is pretty special, I can say that,” said Klopp.

“When I heard about that game back in Germany years ago, I tried everything I could to watch it. That’s the truth.

“Very often it was very intense.”

Just as Gini Wijnaldum emphasized this week, Klopp spoke of the danger for Liverpool if they were to take United for granted on Sunday. United have struggled this season due to a bouquet of problems that includes poor transfers and a troubled relationship between Mourinho and his star midfielder Paul Pogba. But Klopp knows the talent peppered throughout United’s squad and will have his team prepared.

“There’s a lot of quality. There’s speed. There’s technique. They are physically strong. They have pretty much everything. They still have De Gea in goal.

“They have strikers. They can switch between Rashford, Lukaku, and others. They have Lingard. They have Martial.

“We don’t judge the points they have, we judge the quality they have.”

Liverpool must keep winning if they are to remain at the top of the Premier League table. Manchester City are not about to roll over now that they’ve dropped to second place. Sunday is another moment for Klopp’s team to stand up for a big occasion and walk out winners. United’s league position is great, but can’t be mistaken as a reason to count them out.
