Liverpool Suffer Latest Injury Blow Ahead of Man Utd Clash
Another Reds defender appears unable to suit up for Sunday’s marquee matchup
Liverpool have paid dearly for an otherwise excellent week that has seen them ascend to the top of the Premier League and breathtakingly scrape through to the Champions League knockout stages.
The price appears to have been injuries to breakout star Joe Gomez, fourth-choice center half Joël Matip and young star Trent Alexander-Arnold over the course of the past three games that has Jürgen Klopp going from calling on arguably the deepest defensive core in the league to the prospect of regularly fielding James Milner at right back—all just as the most hectic fixture stretch of the season starts to rev up.
While Gomez and Matip had both been confirmed out for six weeks each as they recover, the hope had been that Alexander-Arnold would be ready to suit up as the Reds take on their arch rivals, Manchester United on Sunday. The 20-year-old full back had limped off with a foot injury during his side’s stirring 1-0 victory over Napoli midweek but had not been definitively ruled out of any upcoming matches.
However, hopes that the born Scouser would be able to able to ease the defensive crisis have taken a blow as Alexander-Arnold was spotted with his foot in a protective boot at a promo event for the video game Battlefield V.
Nevertheless, the table-topping Liverpool take on a United side even more decimated by injuries than the Merseysiders as the Reds hope to survive this mini-crisis and cement their lead at the top of their table.
