Pundit believes Liverpool’s improved defence is more down to Alisson rather than Van Dijk
Pundit Lee Dixon believes Liverpool’s improved defence is more down to goalkeeper Alisson, rather than Virgil van Dijk.
Alisson was signed from AS Roma before the beginning of the 2018-19 season for a fee of £65million, as the Reds were desperate to replace Loris Karius, and he has not missed a beat.
Van Dijk was brought in during January for a fee of £75million from Southampton and has had an enormous impact on the team also.
Despite both players being sensational since joining, Dixon believes Alisson has had the bigger impact out of the two.
“We’ve talked about the back four and how Van Dijk has changed all that,” Dixon said on Premier League Today.
“But the fact that they’ve now got a goalkeeper behind, those back four players are now standing on the pitch looking downwards, not bothered about what’s behind them.

“If you’ve got a goalkeeper who’s a little bit on edge, Mignolet, etc, you’re on a half turn and not quite sure.
“It’s a different mentality to having the play in front of you and being able to think ‘he’s fine’.
“That makes a massive difference to a back four.”
