Steve McMahon: Liverpool are ‘head and shoulders above United’
Former Liverpool title winner Steve McMahon has claimed the Reds are miles ahead of rivals Manchester United heading into this weekend’s clash.
The ex-England midfielder has admitted he is surprised by Liverpool’s progress this season under Jurgen Klopp, which has seen the club become genuine title contenders.
McMahon also says he is surprised by the level of inconsistency shown by United under Portuguese boss Jose Mourinho.

He said: “We are way past United at this stage. United have fallen so below their standards and we have gone above where I think we should be in this short period of time.
There is miles of difference between Liverpool and Manchester United.”
The Reds haven’t won a Premier League game against United since March 2014, when Steven Gerrard scored from the spot twice at Old Trafford before Luis Suarez rounded off the scoring.
McMahon believes that Liverpool are in a great position to record their first league win against the Red Devils in four years, claiming the league leaders are favourites in the tie at Anfield.
“We’re now head and shoulders above Manchester United and we should take the game to them, while being patient,” he said.
“The atmosphere and the game will be different, but we are favourites.”
