Van Dijk: Liverpool expected a different tactical approach from Man United

Virgil van Dijk says that Manchester United were expecting a different tactical approach from Manchester United when they visited Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds dispatched the away side 3-1, with Xherdan Shaqiri scoring the second and third goals to earn his side the points.

United’s only real chance of the game – one which Jesse Lingard did well to dispatch – came as a result of a poor goalkeeping error from Alisson Becker and van Dijk says Liverpool were expecting more of a threat from United.

Speaking after the game, van Dijk said: “We dominated the game and we deserved it.

“We were expecting something else (tactically) from them. We were prepared and we knew about their strengths. We were ready for the fight.”

The win sends Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League after Manchester City won against Everton on Saturday to briefly climb to the summit.
