Who could Liverpool face in the next stage of the Champions League?

Liverpool will discover on Monday who they will face in the Champions League round of 16 after successfully progressing beyond the group stages.

A solitary Mohamed Salah goal was enough to see the Reds through with a tight 1-0 win over Napoli on Tuesday evening.

Heroics at the other end late on from Alisson Becker ensured that Liverpool preserved their slender lead after Sadio Mane squandered a hat-trick of chances to put the game beyond doubt.

The Italian side joined Red Star Belgrade in exiting the competition, with Jurgen Klopp’s side and Paris Saint-Germain making it through from Group C to the next stage.

Liverpool, who ultimately finished second in their group, will now be drawn against a top-finishing side after the final standings of all eight groups were set last night.

The Reds cannot, of course, be drawn against a fellow Premier League club, so their next opponent can will be selected from a relatively-short list of teams who topped their group.

Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona, PSG and Porto topped groups A, B, C and D respectively on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday, the final group leaders were established as Bayern Munich (E), Manchester City (F), Real Madrid (G) and Juventus (H). Manchester United and Tottenham both finished as runners-up in their groups.

All of that means Liverpool will be drawn against one of the following teams on Monday: Borussia, Dortmund, Barcelona, Porto, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, or Juventus.

None of those fixtures would represent an easy passage into the next round for the Reds, so Jurgen Klopp’s men will have to be on top form when their next European night rolls around.

The draw will take place on Monday at 11am in Nyon, Switzerland.
