Harry Wilson Appears Set to Complete Loan with Derby County

More often than not, when players go out on loan, they seem to largely disappear from Liverpool supporters’ consciousnesses. Out of sight, out of mind.

That is definitely not the case with Harry Wilson. The lad can’t seem to stop banging ‘em in for Derby County. And, banging ‘em in from range with impressive regularity. Simply, they are the kind of impressive goals that turn heads, get posts on social media, and so on.

With this loan spell going so well (as well as his previous one in the second half of last year), there have been murmurs about bringing Wilson back to Melwood. However, those murmurs appear to be largely fan-driven.

“I have heard nothing from Liverpool, which is good news - no news is good news,” Derby manager Frank Lampard said in an interview.

“I hope he stays with us because I think it has been good for all parties, so far.

“In terms of his individual performance, 10 goals is a great return, and his spectacular goals have been great on the eye but my biggest pleasure is seeing his performances in the past month.

“His all-round game, the energy, the personality to receive the ball and be pivotal in the game has gone up a notch, and I think there are more notches to go.

“That is credit to Harry and hopefully he can continue that progress in the second half of the season.”

Counterintuitively, the fact that so many of his goals come from distance might be giving Klopp & Co. pause. The Liverpool side that Klopp has built has been fantastic at working the ball into positions to create high-quality chances (hence the fantastic expected goal stats for this season).

We saw from our last true long-range merchant, Philippe Coutinho, that long, speculative cracks from range can often be counterproductive in the long run.

Moreover, Klopp might look at our current attacking options, and not see a place for Wilson in the squad. So it is probably best for all involved that he stays and gets regular minutes for a Championship side that is pushing for promotion.
