How this key Liverpool man helped Reds seal big money transfer

Jordan Henderson Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool signed Virgil van Dijk for a world record fee of £75million – the most paid for a defender – and Jordan Henderson was quietly pivotal in helping get a deal across the line.

The Liverpool skipper is certainly not universally appreciated both in and out of the Anfield fanbase but his influence is not to be ignored.

Melissa Reddy has revealed in her brilliantly comprehensive long-form article for Joe this week that Hendo was pivotal in helping Virgil van Dijk get his move to Liverpool.

Reddy writes: “Jordan Henderson, whose role in helping Liverpool land the world’s most expensive defender has not been given the consideration it deserves – they share an agent and the captain kept on at recruitment to do everything possible to secure Van Dijk – mentioned that turning around in the tunnel and seeing those two was like a victory before kick-off.”

The former Sunderland man has benefitted from being partnered with Fabinho in a double pivot at the base of the Liverpool midfield and has been a key figure in the charge to the top of the Premier League this season.

While there are undoubtedly more talented midfielders than Jordan Henderson, his loyalty to the club has never been in question and neither are his leadership qualities – especially off the pitch.
