Klopp Addresses Virgil van Dijk Fitness and Right Back Uncertainty
The manager provided updates on Van Dijk and joked about a lack of right back options at his pre-match presser.
There’s good news and bad news for Liverpool on the injury front. The good news is that, following reports of Virgil van Dijk having missed training earlier in the week, manager Jürgen Klopp said that his star defender was only out due to illness, not injury.
The bad news is that Trent Alexander-Arnold isn’t yet ready to return to action which, with Joe Gomez also out and James Milner suspended due to the red card he picked up against Crystal Palace, is going to give Klopp a selection headache at right back.
“You will have to wait until tomorrow,” Klopp joked when asked what his solution would be for at today’s pre-match press conference. “But yes, we will play with a right back or maybe a wingback. I have no clue what we are doing tomorrow to be honest!”
It’s not an ideal situation, and it could mean either shifting Fabinho over to right back or giving young Rafa Camacho his first league start, while Klopp has right back conundrum, elsewhere in the squad at least the injury concerns are minimal.
“Virgil was a little bit ill but he should train today so we will see,” Klopp noted when asked about his options elsewhere. “Gini [Wijnaldum] trained, Fabinho will train today. Trent is getting closer and closer but is not available yet.”
