Virgil van Dijk named Premier League Player of the Month for December

Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk has been named as the Premier League’s Player of the Month for December after helping his side open a four point lead at the top of the table with seven wins from seven games over the festive period.

When the Dutchman signed for Liverpool just over a year ago for a world record £75million fee, the club was criticised for spending so much money on one player.

Fast forward 12 months, however, and the decision to reinvest some of the money that was generated from selling Philippe Coutinho for £142million has been justified.

“I didn’t know that but I’m very proud to win this,” he told Premier League Productions when told that he is the first defender to win the award for six years.

“All credit to everyone that helped me win it and the fans who have been supporting me. December was a great month and hopefully we can keep going.

“It was a fantastic month for all of us, there were some great games. I enjoyed every bit of it. The Arsenal game was a great game to play in – it was obviously a fantastic win.”
