Klopp Talk: We Have to Work Very Hard 14 Times

The manager knows what it will take to win the title.

Liverpool were handed a gift this week as Manchester City suffered a surprise loss to Newcastle. We were unfortunately not able to fully capitalise on this, but still managed to gain a point. Jürgen Klopp, as we now know, did not watch the game, though his reasoning was surprisingly candid, and stated that the same will apply to City’s game against Arsenal today.

“We are training!”, The Liverpool Echo reports Klopp as saying. “It was simple on Tuesday night, I came home from a very long working day, and I already saw on the phone it was 1-0 [to City].

”So I didn’t want to come in to the missus and say I am going in the other room. We watched a movie.

“But I don’t ignore [football], I actually wanted to watch it but at 1-0 up after one minute, I thought ‘come on’, it is going in that direction.

”Then when [Newcastle’s comeback] started, my smartphone started buzzing. I looked at the result, I was surprised.

”We all have to work very hard to win one Premier League game. That is what we have to do 14 times.”

Looking ahead to Monday night’s trip to West Ham, Klopp admitted that the scheduling was not ideal.

“We didn’t make the fixture schedule,” he added. “Monday night in London. When you want to drive from here it is five, six hours.

”The good thing is we have a lot of Liverpool fans all around the country so maybe they have a shorter drive to West Ham.

”But of course Monday night football is not too good for fans, that is clear.”

As for Liverpool’s decent record against West Ham, inflicting some very easy wins in recent times, Klopp stated that “will not happen this time. It is a different West Ham team, a few very good signings and Manuel [Pellegrini] is a fantastic manager.

“I said the first matchday this season, West Ham were not ready [when Liverpool won 4-0 at Anfield]. Going away to Liverpool was not a teddy bear’s picnic.

”They are really tuned now, really strong. I liked what they did.”
