Dejan Lovren Returns to Training Following Hamstring Injury

Lovren is back in training and a spot on the bench against Burnley is likely.

Despite a slew of defensive injuries in 2019, Liverpool have maintained their position as the Premier League’s top defensive unit, conceding just one goal in six games since the start of February and maintaining a best-in-Europe 0.2 expected goals against.

It’s an inarguably strong foundation, and one that got stronger as Dejan Lovren returned to training for the first time following a two-month absence. A start against Burnley on Sunday is unlikely, but limited options mean the Croatian could have a place on the bench.

That according to The Liverpool Echo’s James Pearce, who says Lovren won’t be expected to take long to work his way back into the mix despite his lengthy layoff with a hamstring injury suffered against Wolverhampton in the FA Cup in January.

Meanwhile, Joe Gomez isn’t back training yet but the club expect that he could be playing again by the end of the month and have pencilled him in for the mach against Tottenham on March 31st, following the final international break of the 2018-19 season.

And while Liverpool’s defence has remained strong in the absence of Lovren and Gomez, the hope will be that their return will perhaps free up Jürgen Klopp to be more adventurous with his midfield selection, potentially aiding Liverpool’s struggling attack.
