Divock Origi Talks About The Merseyside Derby And THAT Goal

Origi was typically modest. But we don’t have to be.

No matter what happens this season, one of the standout moments—one that will be celebrated on highlight reels for years to come—was Divock Origi’s dramatic (and farcical) 96th minute winner in front of the Kop in the Merseyside Derby.

The moment was an important one for the team, but also for the player, having been on the wrong end of a red-card challenge from Everton several seasons ago, a challenge that seriously derailed his Liverpool career.

However, a lot has happened since then. Liverpool have kicked on, fighting to end their decades-long title drought, and Origi has been left fighting for any spare minutes he can get his hands (or feet) on. That changed midweek, when the striker came into the squad and put on a hell of a shift for the injured Roberto Firmino.

“I think [the Watford game] was a good boost for me,” Origi explained to the club’s official website. “It’s been a good season for us all and I always said that I wanted to shine my light, so I think having played that game, an important game, and being able to help the team, play my game and show my qualities, I was very happy.”

Bobby might not be back for tomorrow’s crosstown clash, leaving the door open for Divock to make yet another start (or at least appearance). The Belgian striker has a decent rate of return against the Toffees, with three goals in his Liverpool career, but he insists that the focus will be on the game, not the opponent.

“We all know that we have big ambitions for this season, but we want to take it game by game and perform every game.

“We know what it means, this game has a bigger meaning for everyone, but in the end we have to stay focused, do what we do in training every day and just try to use all the elements to beat Everton because it is a good team.

“But we have all confidence that if we do everything we can, we can win this game.”

Of course Divock was asked about that goal, and he tried to remain modest.

“I’ve had a lot special moments, but I think it’s up there. I never want to pick one moment, but I’d say it’s definitely up there.”

Sure Divock, sure. It’s not like the club put out an every angle compilation of that goal or anything.
