Rumour Mongering: Rabiot Linked to Man City, Tottenham, and Liverpool

With talk of Barcelona and Bayern cooling, Adrien Rabiot is now being linked with a trio of English clubs.

Adrien Rabiot was meant to be a Barcelona player last summer, and he was meant to be a Barcelona player again heading into January. And he’s still, probably, somehow going to end up a Barcelona player when everything’s been said and done.

Until that happens, though, the rumour mongers are going to do what they do and talk about other options, other clubs, and other futures for the 23-year-old who’s been frozen out at Paris Saint-Germain since making it clear he was leaving.

To that end, after pushing Bayern Munich as a possible Barcelona-alternative for the past few weeks with little substantiation on the German end, reports in France are now taking Bayern off the table and loading up on the Premier League.

Liverpool, Manchester City, and Tottenham are now all said to be in negotiations, the current top three in England competing for Rabiot’s signature—which, it’s said, will cost £8-9M per year in salary plus a similarly sized signing bonus.

As a weekly wage, it’s in the £150-175k range, and given the premium demanded by free transfers it’s perhaps not excessive. Still, it would put him level with Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mané, and Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool.

Whether he’d be worth that, of course, depends on where the club might see him fitting in to the pecking order in midfield. Assuming, that is, that they’re even still interested in a player they’ve been linked to off and on for some time now.

Rabiot, quite obviously, would be an interesting target for any top club given his PSG deal ends this summer. But the manner in which he’s being linked to clubs in France suggests an agent working hard to find their client a new home.

That means that while it’s interesting, perhaps, to see Liverpool linked and get a feel for Rabiot’s likely wage demands, it would probably be unwise to make the jump from there to his imminent signing by any of the linked clubs.
