Virgil Van Dijk is February’s PFA Premier League Player of the Month

The best defender in the League has won the award for the second time this season

After winning the accolade in November last year, Virgil van Dijk has once again been awarded the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Premier League Player of the Month for February.

VVD has now played 58 PL games (including Sunday’s goalless draw against Everton at Goodison Park) for Liverpool since joining the side on 1 January 2018, keeping 28 clean sheets and with the Reds conceding less than one goal per game since his signing.

The Dutch colussus has played in each one of Liverpool’s 29 league fixtures this season and has been directly responsible (along with goalkeeper Alisson Becker) for the side having the best defensive record in the Premier League with 17 clean sheets and a mere 15 goals conceded. VVD was integral in the Red’s success during the month of February with three clean sheets in four PL games, winning an incredible 25 aerial duels, and making 23 clearances. He also managed to get himself onto the score sheet twice with two headed goals which sealed a Red victory over the Hornets at the end of February.

Virgil was among eight nominees for the PFA prize of the month which included teammate Sadio Mané,Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero, Burnley’s Ashley Barnes, Sean Longstaff from Newcastle United, Manchester United’s Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw, and Wilfried Zaha from Crystal Palace.

For many, VVD’s impervious and commanding form has made him an early contender for the PFA player of the season and following his Man of the Match performance against the Toffees on Sunday, Jamie Carragher feels the same way.

“Van Dijk’s performance today was unbelievable,” Jamie told SkySports. ”I think he should be PFA Player of the Year. Maybe it’s too early for that, but today, if he’s not playing, I think Everton win the game. He looks like a man playing in a kids’ game. He’s playing against some of the top players in European football in the Premier League, but everything is so easy...”

VVD has definitely been a talisman for the Reds since his signing and as a 27 year old centre-back, he can still get even better. After yesterday, the Reds are a point below first placed Manchester City who currently have an injury crisis where their defenders are concerned. Thusly, VVD could very well be the difference that seals a Liverpool title win this season.
