Klopp Raises Possibility of Joe Gomez Return in Champions League
The Liverpool boss says Jo Go is ready to come on and do a great job.
How good is this Liverpool team? Good enough that the standout player from the first few months of the season—Joe Gomez—can have his ankle broken after a “fantastic tackle,” and the club can continue it’s title push and deep run into the Champions League.
Although Gomez is probably in line to be Liverpool’s second-choice center back when everyone is healthy, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren have both played a major part in the success of Liverpool so far this season. And with a win or a draw tonight (or a loss by a single goal), Liverpool’s season will get even better, managing a second consecutive semifinal in the Champions League.
Gomez has been on the mend in recent weeks, and after a couple of appearances on the bench, manager Jurgen Klopp is convinced the player can come on and do a job for the Reds.
“He is getting better and better,” Kloppo said of Jo Go in yesterday’s pre-match presser.
”Whether he’s ready to play 90 minutes from the start in a Champions League game, I’m not so sure.
”Can he come on and do a great job? I would say yes, that is possible, and that’s the most important thing for us.”
While it seems as if a surprise start is out of the question for Gomez, it’s clear that Klopp wouldn’t put Gomez on the bench unless he was able to come in and perform at the highest levels.
Hopefully if circumstances allow Gomez can come on, even if it’s just to give the overworked Trent Alexander-Arnold a rest toward the end of the tie. It would be a big boost for both the player and squad if Gomez could return to action, especially in such a critical moment.
