Klopp Talk: It Will Be an Intense Second Game
Good night’s work from Liverpool.
A very professional evening’s work from the Liverpool players in the 2-0 win against Porto. While the opposition had their chances, Jürgen Klopp’s men looked the stronger side throughout, and deservedly find themselves strong favourites to make it through the Champions League quarter final tie.
The manager struck his usual pleased but realistic tone.
“We are happy, it is the first leg and it will be an intense second game”, Klopp told BT Sport, as reported by BBC Sport. “We scored two goals and controlled the ball most of the time.
”We gave a few too many set pieces away. I think Porto score about 40% of their goals from set pieces. We also saw one or two counter attacks, but the rest of the game we played really well.
”We lost a little bit of direction in the second half, but there’s nothing to criticise, 2-0 is a very, very good result.
”We knew we had to play the second game and we cannot decide the tie tonight, so now we have to go there and fight again.”
Jordan Henderson, fresh off a very strong performance, struck a similar note, adding that “Porto are a good team with good players, you can see that they are dangerous.
”We wanted to come out in the second half and score one or two more but that wasn’t to be. We didn’t create that much and it was a bit stop-start, but overall we have to be pleased to take 2-0 over there.”
This wasn’t the barnstormer that was last season’s 5-0 win over Porto, but it was a very good outing nonetheless. Liverpool had excellent chances in the first half, and were able to see out the clean sheet in the second. A good night’s work all round, and one that, barring any catastrophes in Portugal, should see Liverpool into the semi-finals against Barcelona or, for the narrative, Manchester United.
