Paul Merson thinks one thing is still holding Liverpool back this season

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes Liverpool remain a lesser side to Manchester City because their substitute’s bench is weaker.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are still right on City’s heels in the race for the Premier League title, and could also reach the Champions League final for a second season running if they can beat Barcelona over two legs.

Speaking on The Debate, Merson highlighted the fact that City have superior options from the bench this season, with the Reds often relying on the likes of Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge, both of whom are likely to leave the club in the summer.

“I think that’s where they [City] have the edge, when it comes to it you look on the bench and they have Jesus and Sane,” Merson said.

“No disrespect but you look on the bench at Liverpool and he will look and think have I got anyone who can come on and change the game here?

“Liverpool have pushed them all the way here. I expect them to beat Barcelona, that’s how good this Liverpool team is and they still might have to wait another year.”
