Rumour Mongering: Divock Origi Earns New Liverpool Deal

The striker could have a future at Anfield after all if the claims today are true.

Last summer, Liverpool tried to find a new home for Divock Origi. Dortmund and Valencia both made approaches for the striker, but in the end neither was willing to pay the required fee. In January, for a time, he looked set to head to Wolves.

Now, if a claim by Football Insider citing inside sources is to be believed, Origi has managed to work his way back into Jürgen Klopp’s long-term plans at Liverpool and will be offered the chance to sign a new deal with the Reds in the coming weeks.

If true, it represents a massive turnaround for Origi, who was determined last summer not to get shuffled out on loan and stuck in another situation like Wolfsburg last season. And certainly, from the outside it does appear something has changed.

Origi didn’t play a league minute before a late appearance against local rivals Everton last December, and even his late heroics in front of goal against the Blues didn’t lead to much more than a handful of substitute appearances over the next two months.

Since West Ham on the fourth of February, though, Origi has appeared in seven of nine league matches, as well as coming on in both Champions League Round of 16 games against Bayern. He hasn’t been a starter, but he has been a regular.

It appears, in fact, that he’s now Jürgen Klopp’s first attacking option, ahead of Xherdan Shaqiri and Daniel Sturridge on the depth chart. So any talk of a new deal might simply be a case of an outlet putting two and two together to get four.

Still, whether or not Origi has in fact done enough to earn himself a future at Liverpool, his role since February is worthy of note, and if Liverpool do go on to win either of the two major prizes they’re still in for he will have played a key role in that.

Whatever happens next for Liverpool and Origi on the contract and transfer front, that’s something worth taking a step back and appreciating.
