Rumour Mongering: RB Leipzig Want €40M for Timo Werner

According to talk in Germany, a price has been set and the player will be sold—and maybe to Liverpool.

If you’re a Liverpool fan, chances are you want the club to sign Timo Werner this summer. The problem is that nobody’s quite sure if the club are actually in for him at this point or if it’s the massed hopes of countless Liverpool fans willing a rumour into existence.

The 23-year-old seems to match the profile of attacker the club will need to target both to improve depth and to bring the average age of the squad down a smidge, and he’s clearly available. The question, then, is are Liverpool actually working to make a deal happen.

“It’s well known we wanted to extend with Timo and to keep him, but he has signalled to us that he doesn’t want to extend,” Red Bull Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff admitted to Sky Germany over the weekend. “Now we need to see what’s right for us and for Timo.”

In Bild and elsewhere in the German press, those words are being interpreted as Leipzig officially declaring Werner for sale as the club look to avoid losing him on a free—to Bayern Munich, naturally—in the summer of 2020 when his current contract expires.

What most seem to agree on beyond that is that Bayern are the frontrunners, with the German giant being talked up as Werner’s preferred destination, though for hopeful Reds fans there’s always a chance that such reports are based on assumption and bias.

Most intriguingly, perhaps, is that the sale price is being talked about as €40M—or about £35M—given Werner’s contract situation, and that there are rumblings Leipzig would prefer to sell him to a club outside Germany if possible. On that front, enter Liverpool.

Paris Saint-Germain have also been mentioned as a possible destination, but depending on just how set on Bayern Werner is—or even if Werner is set on Bayern—the Reds, with their Premier League money and Jürgen Klopp in charge, look likeliest to sign him up.

Maybe. According to the talk in Germany. Because it’s all rather speculative and there’s not a whole lot from the Liverpool end to suggest they’re pushing to get a deal done. But they probably should be. At least that what every Liverpool fan will be thinking now.
