Salah on Goal of the Day: It Was Lucky

Lucky or not, it was gorgeous.

What a day for football. Manchester City, the automatons with whom we are neck and neck, managed to sink Crystal Palace with a morning of exquisite football. Then came Chelsea vs. Liverpool, and a million Twitter accounts talking about The Slip and how this was going to be the end of the Reds’ title dreams. Nothing like a 2-0 win at home to make the banter end, though.

The first goal came out of nowhere after an anxiety-inducing first half. The second goal, while the Kop was still singing Mane’s name, was even more of a surprise and even more of a stunner. Salah took a chance from 20 yards away and Kepa stood absolutely no chance once the ball was in the air.

“I don’t think, I just feel,” Salah told Sky Sports when he was asked what he was thinking when he let that shot loose. “Normally I shoot [with the] inside of the foot but this one — because it’s far [out] — I just hit it with power.”

”I was a bit lucky that the ball hit the net like that.”

After months of people asking if he was a one-season wonder, and then a week of racist and Islamophobic chants against him, his celebratory yoga pose just felt all the more deserved.

And while this goal ties him with Sergio Aguero for Golden Boot this season, it’s not even his favourite Liverpool goal.

“I will always choose [the Everton] one,” he said, referencing his goal in last season’s derby which won him the 2018 Puskas Award. “This is my favourite because it’s my first derby.”

”I think I used everything good — the strength, the technique and the skills,” he added.

Pretty sure the same can be said for today’s goal, too.
