Divock Origi to Barcelona: A Transfer Rumor for the LOLZ

According to reports out of Spain, Barcelona think the Belgian striker is just what they’re looking for. Be sure to remember that extra €100m while you’re at it.

There are well-informed transfer rumors, poorly-informed transfer rumors, wild speculation that become transfer rumors, wildly inaccurate transfer rumors, and then there are wildly inaccurate, poorly-informed, hilariously misguided transfer rumors. Today, we bring you this last and very rare breed of transfer rumor: Divock Origi to Barcelona.

According to the rumor mongers at the never reliable Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona, fresh off of getting Divock’d out of the Champions League semifinal, have identified Origi as the perfect backup for the ageing Luis Suarez.

This is funny on several levels.

If Barcelona are actually interested (big if), they want a player who managed to get just 554 minutes of action between the Premier League and Champions League. Origi is a player who scored big and important goals for Liverpool this campaign, but also one that never really threatened to break into the first team, and struggled during his loan spell at Wolfsburg.

There is also the small matter of the Catalan club apparently agreeing to a €100 million (£88 million) surcharge if they want to poach another Liverpool player within three years of their signing of Philippe Coutinho. Considering Liverpool were looking to offload Origi for around £20 million last summer, and his value has certainly increased after scoring a brace in the Champions League semifinal second leg, we can just call it a cool £110 million. For Divock Origi. To Barcelona.

If anything, we’re being generous, Barca, you should totally take it before Wolves or Newcastle snatch him up.
