Naby Keïta Set to Miss Remainder of Season with Groin Injury

Given how little season is left that’s not exactly a surprise.

There isn’t much of a season left. Just three more games over eleven days to go. Which means it’s not a surprise that today it’s being reported that Naby Keïta is expected to miss the remainder of it due to the groin injury suffered against Barcelona last night.

Liverpool’s medical staff are said to still be determining the precise severity of it, but according to James Pearce of The Liverpool Echo at least they know enough to know that he won’t be playing again at any point over those next three games and eleven days.

It’s possible, perhaps, that were Liverpool to mount a miraculous comeback against Barcelona in the Champions League next Tuesday, he could be fit for a final that wouldn’t take place until next month, but right now there feels very little hope for that.

As it is, weeks is the minimum timeframe for Keïta’s recovery. Meanwhile, with striker Roberto Firmino only able to make a brief and largely ineffectual cameo against Barcelona last night, there will also be concerns about his fitness for the coming eleven days.

Liverpool will, one imagines, need him to have any faint hope whatsoever in the league and Europe, but given the injury question marks heading into last night and now the quick turnaround between matches, the role he’ll be able to play seems up in the air.
