Divock Origi to Consider Liverpool Future with New Contract on Offer

The player wants to let the excitement of the final pass before making a decision.

In five or ten years, Divock Origi will be the player Liverpool fans remember as the cult hero of the club’s run to win their sixth European Cup thanks to his goals against Tottenham and Barcelona. Whether his immediate future lies with the club, though, isn’t certain.

It has been widely reported that Origi has been offered a new deal from the club, but with his current contract running through 2020 and the player now 24 years old and on the cusp of his prime footballing years, it isn’t certain that he will choose to remain at Anfield.

According to Belgian football expert Kristof Terreur, Origi wants to let the excitement of Saturday’s victory fade a little before making a decision as to whether he signs the deal on offer—or moves on in search of a larger role and a better chance at starting minutes.

Belgium are set to play a pair of Euro qualifiers on the 8th and 11th against Kazakhstan and Scotland before their national team players break for the summer, and Origi has reportedly said that his future with Liverpool will be decided “after the international games.”

The choice Origi will soon have to make, then, will be between being one of the first attackers off the bench for a club challenging for domestic and European honours or if his career would be best served by starting every week for a slightly less ambitious side.

And while it’s clear Liverpool would like to keep him around, trying to push past our Liverpool biases to look at the situation objectively, there is no easy, clear-cut answer as to what the best move would be for Origi.
