Rumour Mongering: Liverpool in Talks for Bargain Bundesliga Striker

Werder Bremen forward Max Kruse is out of contract and would be an interesting bargain option for the Reds.

Liverpool are perfectly capable of going big these days in the transfer market, but when the chance to find themselves a proper bargain presents itself, they aren’t going to pass it up. That’s the idea, at least, when it comes to Werder Bremen striker Max Kruse.

On paper, a 31-year-old who’s spent his career with mid-table Bundesliga sides might not scream Liverpool target, but with the player’s contract expiring he could be had on a free transfer and there’s a certain sense to the idea of the Reds signing him.

Most assumed Liverpool would go younger with any signings this summer, but at striker they already have younger with Rhian Brewster. If Liverpool believe in his talent—and signs suggest they do—bringing in someone like Timo Werner could block his path.

Meanwhile, though Kruse is older, he does seem to fit the profile in other ways. He’s not a speedster, but he is a high engine, high work-rate, press from the front central attacker who can play in the middle as an outright striker or as a supporting playmaker.

In 36 total appearances last season for Bremen, he recorded 12 goals and 14 assists for a goal involvement every 124 minutes he was on the pitch. If Firmino is the present, then, and Brewster the future, bringing in Kruse as an option could make sense.
