Liverpool Transfer News: Marko Grujic Future Reportedly Decided

Another loan is on the cards for Grujic with a sale or first team role apparently ruled out for 2019-20.

Marko Grujic will not be back at Liverpool for pre-season this summer if everything goes to plan but the player will not be sold, with the 23-year-old Serbian midfielder expected to be sent out on loan in the coming weeks.

That’s the story from Press Association Sport and others today, with the message seemingly clear: after a promising year at Hertha Berlin, Liverpool believe Grujic has a long-term future at the club but that he will not be needed this season.

With Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Gini Wijnaldum, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keïta more established midfield options, Jürgen Klopp already has six senior players to choose from for three positions.

As such, Grujic’s path to first team minutes at Anfield would be difficult, and minutes are key to his continued progression. Add it up and it appears the club believe there is no upside even to keeping him on hand for pre-season.

Hertha Berlin and Werder Bremen have most frequently been linked with a loan move for Grujic in recent months, though both Bundesliga clubs have reportedly been seeking a two-year loan for the midfielder.

Atletico Madrid have also been linked as a potential permanent destination, but with Grujic’s contract running through 2023 there is no reason for Liverpool to sell if they believe he could as yet have a role to play.
