Mourinho calls Liverpool star “a king” after Champions League triumph

Jose Mourinho has identified one Liverpool player who he believes has been “a king” this season: Virgil van Dijk.

The centre-back put in another top performance against Spurs in the Champions League final on Saturday evening, helping his side keep yet another clean sheet on their way to European glory.

The Dutchman is now being tipped to win the Ballon d’Or after a superb season for the Reds, during which he has amassed plaudits from every angle.

And Mourinho, who has rarely praised Liverpool or Jurgen Klopp, has hailed 27-year-old Van Dijk in the wake of Liverpool’s Champions League triumph.

“Van Dijk is a king, he is a huge personality,” Mourinho said.

“Positionally, a top top player.”

Van Dijk is now widely regarded as the best defender in the world after making a £75million switch to Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018.
