Rumor Mongering: Werder Bremen Insist Goalkeeper Not For Sale

The Werder Bremer Sporting Director quashes transfer rumors we didn’t even know existed. Ok, Jeff.

Among the various needs Liverpool would likely need to address once they finish talking about Six, baby, is that of the player tasked with backing up goalkeeper, Alisson Becker. Simon Mignolet is young enough that a move away for more playing time makes a lot of sense. And given how he’s been relegated to backup, most would find his departure an inevitability.

It is a strange proposition for any keeper: to be ok with waiting for the call up, which may never come, and sat behind one of the best players in the world. And with goalkeeper being the type of position where rotation generally doesn’t happen, finding a player that is of the same quality as someone as good as Becker seems highly unlikely.

Which brings us to the possibility that Liverpool might be in for Jiri Pavlenka, starter for Werder Bremen. At least this is true according to Werder Bremen sporting director, Frank Bauman.

Liverpool being in the market for a backup is not surprising. What is surprising, though, is that until Mr. Bauman decided to name Liverpool directly, there were no real rumblings linking Liverpool to Pavlenka.

Which is all fine and dandy, I suppose. After all, silly season is whatever you want it to be.

Still, we’re going to be looking at this rumor a bit askew and asking for a quarry of salt on the side thank you very much. Because as much sense as it makes for Liverpool to be in for a player like Pavlenka - who Transfermarkt compares to Juventus’s Mattis Perin and Dortmund’s Roman Burki - the fact that all of this emanates from Werder’s side makes me skeptical.

Welcome, Reds, to the official opening of silly season for our Champions League winning side!
