Southampton goalkeeper open to Liverpool transfer

Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is open to a potential move to Liverpool this summer, according to the Evening Standard.

The 31-year-old is no longer first choice under Ralph Hasenhuttl, having lost his place to Angus Gunn last season.

Liverpool have been linked with McCarthy in recent days, and it now appears as though the keeper would welcome any approach from the Merseyside club.

A number of clubs are tracking him, however, so Jurgen Klopp would need to move quickly if he intends to bring him to Anfield.

The Reds boss will need a new backup goalkeeper once Simon Mignolet departs the club this summer, with the Belgian hoping to secure first-team football elsewhere.

Southampton are open to selling either McCarthy or Fraser Foster this summer in order to reduce their wage bill, with the latter reportedly earning £80,000 per week at St Mary’s.

McCarthy is contracted until 2022 but would certainly be the more attractive option of the two for Liverpool, given that he would come in as a deputy to Golden Glove-winner Alisson Becker.
