Virgil van Dijk tells Liverpool he wants to sign a new contract

Virgil van Dijk has informed Liverpool that he wants to sign a new deal at the club, according to ESPN FC.

The Reds paid £75million in January 2018 to acquire the Dutchman from Southampton, at which time he signed a five-and-a-half-year deal.

And now, with the dust from Liverpool’s Champions League final win still settling, news has broken that the centre-back has told the club that he wants to extend his stay at Anfield.

Sources have told ESPN that Van Dijk actually informed Liverpool of his desire to commit himself for a longer term before the final win in Madrid on Saturday.

The 27-year-old’s agent, Neil Fewings of Wasserman, is not pushing Liverpool to come to the table with a fresh deal as both sides know the player is keen to stay.

Van Dijk is the third captain at Liverpool behind Jordan Henderson and James Milner, and already earns a substantial wage, but Liverpool will be only too happy to tie him down for the best of his years.

James Milner and Joel Matip are also expected to sign new deals in the coming weeks, while talks are ongoing over a new contract for Divock Origi.
