Jürgen Klopp Confirms Simon Mignolet to Stay at Liverpool for 2019-20 Season

Klopp confirmed that the veteran Belgian goalkeeper will remain at the club.

At the close of the 2018-19 season, the consensus was that Liverpool would need to sign a new backup goalkeeper over the summer, with Simon Mignolet widely expected to leave the club in search of a starting role.

In recent months, though, the story has shifted towards the 31-year-old Belgian having decided to remain at Anfield as backup to Alisson Becker and starter in the domestic cups. Jürgen Klopp has now confirmed that.

“Yes, that’s how I’ve heard,” Klopp said when asked if Mignolet would be staying following Sunday’s pre-season victory over Bradford. “I’ve had a lot of conversations with him. Before we left we had a talk and I would say yes.”

Meanwhile, even if Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation looks set for the coming season, the club look a bit short there now in pre-season with Alisson on his holidays following the Copa America and a string of recent injuries.

The plan had been to give Caoimhin Kelleher and Vitezslav Jaros minutes behind Mignolet this month, but both are expected to miss pre-season due to injuries—wrist and elbow respectively—leaving Klopp without options.

With Kamil Grabara also on holidays after being busy this summer with the Polish U21s, the club have signed 35-year-old Andy Lonergan—most recently of Rochdale on loan from Middlesbrough—to a temporary contract.

“At a club like Liverpool you need two number ones and we have that, so that’s cool,” Klopp added. “That’s a very good situation for the club but a situation I think you should have so everything is fine from my point of view.”
