Klopp Warns Against Getting Carried Away Over Reds Starlet

Rhian Brewster’s much-anticipated season debut got off to a cracking start that already has people talking

You guys, Rhian Brewster might be a baller.

We are less than 24 hours into the 2019-20 season and the heralded Liverpool academy product is the name on everyone’s lips after a barnstorming first team debut. Yes, Brewster’s brace of poacher’s finishes were against League One side, Tranmere Rovers in Thursday’s preseason fixture, and of course, Reds and England supporters need be wary of overloading the hype train but it’s all JUST SO EXCITING.

The forward fired the first of a quickfire double late in the first half, nodding in fellow starlet, Harry Wilson’s cross with an sharp snap header.

The 19-year-old struck again minutes later, showing his striker’s instincts to react fastest and tap in the rebound from a James Milner shot.

What if Liverpool have the rotational attacking piece the club have been mooted to be in the transfer market for (despite the evidence to the contrary per all club-connected journalists) already in the squad in the form of the toothy teenager? What if Brewster—who, remember was the standout performer in a World Cup-winning England U17 squad boasting the likes of Jadon Sanch, Callum Hudson-Odi and Phil Foden—is actually the next great British talent in the making? How about the Golden Boy award? Ballon d’Or?

Here to talk us all down from placing bets on Brewster winning the Premier League Golden Boot is the ever-sensible Jürgen Klopp:

“First and foremost, we are in 2019, we should stop talking about the player who scored two goals and overlooking what others do in the other 89 minutes,” the normally-affable Klopp chided reporters post-match.

“Rhian Brewster, I love the boy, he is fantastic player but one of the goals probably I would have scored.

“He played a really good game and I saw other good performances—Harry [Wilson] and Ryan [Kent] in the first half and then in the second half incredibly strong.

“We knew Rhian was a good player before,” the German continued. “But why should I play it down? I just don’t want to talk after a game about the guy who scored two goals.

“I saw a really good game and Rhian is a fantastic player. We can talk about him no problem. I don’t want to play him down or it down.”

Fine, keep the lad humble and us fans in check. I’m still putting a tenner on double figure goals for the season.
