Liverpool recruit free agent goalkeeper to cover Alisson Becker

Liverpool have brought goalkeeper Andy Lonergan on board for their pre-season tour of the United States, according to the Evening Standard.

The 35-year-old is a free agent after leaving Middlesborough at the end of last season and is set to join Jurgen Klopp’s side during their preparations for the upcoming campaign.

The Reds are currently short on goalkeeping options, with first-choice Alisson Becker on holiday and Academy prospects Viteslav Jaros and Caoimhin Kelleher both injured.

Simon Mignolet is now the only available keeper for Klopp’s side, and the manager has opted to recruit Lonergan on a temporary basis to help ease pressure on the Belgian.

Lonergan has a good level of experience after spending his career with Preston, Leeds and Bolton Wanderers.

He will join Liverpool for their matches against Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla and Sporting Lisbon while Alisson recuperates.
