Rhian Brewster Buoyed by His Performance Against Tranmere Rovers

The young Liverpool starlet is the talk of football town after scoring in the club’s first pre-season match.

I don’t know what’s going to happen with Rhian Brewster at Liverpool. He’s a young striker with the potential to break into Jürgen Klopp’s team but aside from a small selection of performances more than a year ago there’s not been much to really get excited about.

Brewster scored two goals on Thursday in Liverpool’s pre-season friendly against Tranmere Rovers, and assisted another. Klopp was complimentary of the player after the match but was aware of the possibility for creating headlines. The manager wants his young players to learn to keep their heads out of the clouds and their focus on the team.

But scoring for the first team after such a long recovery from knee surgery must have felt pretty good. Then scoring another and having assisted one, Brewster will want to use the elation he’s feeling right now and turn it into more and better performances. With the senior forwards not expected back to Melwood any time soon Rhian has an opportunity to find some rhythm this month.

“This time last year I was out injured, I was here watching the boys play against Tranmere and this year I’m here playing,” said Brewster.

“It’s mad how far you can come in a year. I’m loving every minute of pre-season. It’s tough, don’t get me wrong, but I’d rather be out there than on the treatment bench.

“I’m taking every moment as it comes. It’s great to be back out there.”

At 19-years-old, Brewster should be getting tested on the big stage this season. I expect, if all goes to plan, we’ll see him on the bench from time to time and getting 15 or 20 minutes of a second half here and there.

Many a young starlet has shone brightly in pre-season and disappeared from view once the season properly begins. But Brewster is expected to buck those odds. The manager is definitely confident in the player progressing. Liverpool extended Brewster’s contract in July 2018 are said to have allowed Dominic Solanke to leave due to the potential of Brewster to rise up and take his place in the team.
