Rumor Mongering: Real Betis Reportedly Lower Junior Firpo Asking Price

Apparently the La Liga club will now accept offers as low as £20 million for the young fullback.
Liverpool kick off their Premier League campaign next Friday, which also means the summer transfer window will slam shut a week from tomorrow. Most Liverpool fans expected more than a pair of talented, but largely untested, teenagers this window. But increasingly that seems to be the totality of our summer transfer haul.
However, there is a always hope that Michael Edwards & Co. are furiously working away at their laptops, trying to find a real transfer coup before next Thursday’s deadline. And if the rumor mongers are to be believed, they might just have a deal on their hands with a cut-rate fee for 22-year-old Real Betis Junior Firpo.
According to the Spanish publication (and frequent monger of rumors) Sport, Real Betis are willing to accept a fee well below the £50 million release clause, closer to the neighborhood of £20 million. The article claims that the club need to sell because of their recent acquisition of Nabil Fekir. (Hey! Remember him?)
Liverpool have been linked on and off with Firpo all summer, and taking advantage of a cash-strapped club does seem a very Liverpool thing to do. Moreover, the departure of Alberto Moreno has left a spot in the squad for a backup to Andy Robertson, even if said back up would still cost 2.5 Robbos.
All of that said, this particular rumor is probably not true. Money would not appear to be the biggest concern for Liverpool this summer, but rather the lack of availability of players who would drastically improve the squad or starting XI. If Edwards et al. has considered Firpo this summer, it seems likely that they would have already made a move for him. Unless he’s really playing 4-D chess and foresaw them asking for a reduced fee months in advance, in which case, color me impressed.
