Rumour Mongering: AC Milan Face Struggle to Sign Dejan Lovren

Reports in Italy say the only reason a deal hasn’t been done yet is money.

Milan want to sign Dejan Lovren to improve their currently shaky defensive situation. And, for his part, Dejan Lovren wants to head to Italy and a locked-on starter for Milan. The only problem with getting a deal done is the money.

At least that’s the story out of Italy today, with CalcioMercato claiming that—as you’d expect for a club that just got banned from the Europa League for FFP violations—cash is tight and balancing the books a priority for Milan right now.

And that makes paying the £25M Liverpool are asking for Lovren as well matching Lovren’s £100k per week salary a difficult proposition for the tottering Italian giants, who desperately need to sign a starting centre half this summer.

With Cristian Zapata having departed and Mattia Caldara out with a long-term injury, I Rossoneri look to be down to just Alessio Romagnoli and Mateo Musacchio as their senior centre half options heading into the 2019-20 season.

Then you have Liverpool willing to sell and Lovren willing to join—but neither is especially willing to entertain the idea of giving Milan a bargain, with both content with the current status quo if the right offer doesn’t come along.

Which all rather makes it sound like there’s no deal to be done here right now, despite the willingness on Liverpool and Lovren’s end and need on Milan’s, because as it stands Milan simply cannot make Lovren’s signing work financially.

Still, if that changes for whatever reason in the coming weeks, it wouldn’t be a shock to see the soon to be 30-year-old Croatian heading off to Italy before the summer transfer window closes.
