Rumour Mongering: Roma Target Dejan Lovren

Having failed in their efforts to sign Toby Alderweireld, rumour has it Roma could move for Lovren.

Dejan Lovren spent much of the summer being linked with a move to AC Milan, but, if there was ever any truth to that rumour, Milan’s refusal to meet Liverpool’s £25M asking price and Lovren not being especially eager for a move meant that in the end nothing happened.

Now, though, the 30-year-old Croatian defender could have another chance at heading to Serie A this summer, with Gazzetta dello Sport claiming that Roma have targeted Lovren after failing to sign their first choice centre half target, Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld.

According to the Italian outlet, the defender would cost around €20M, but we know from the previous transfer rumours that that simply isn’t true and that Liverpool are far from motivated to sell the veteran—if they were, Lovren might well be at AC Milan right now.

Similarly, Lovren appears content at Liverpool, and it’s worth remembering that last season he started as first-choice partner to Virgil van Dijk before injuries gave chances first to Joe Gomez and then to Joël Matip to win that role for extended stretches during the season.

Which is to say that Lovren might appear fourth on the pecking order today, but that a lot can change over the course of a season and both the player and club appear happy for him to stay and fight for minutes as a member of Liverpool’s enviably deep defensive corps.

For the right price, though, anything is possible. But if Roma truly do want Lovren, they won’t be getting him for less than Liverpool’s asking price, as was made clear already this summer by way of AC Milan’s rumoured interest.
