Injury Update: Alisson Becker Still Not Ready

Liverpool’s #1 is, unfortunately, not quite ready to see the pitch.

Liverpool have kept things ticking in this early run of matches. Three wins, three matches played in the league. They even squeezed out a UEFA Super Cup victory against Chelsea in that. On the weekend, Liverpool face Burnley in their final match before the first International Break comes to break up the action.

Which means that we get an extra week to get some of our injured players back and fit. Alisson Becker is one of the headliners of the injured contingent of LFC players looking to get back to playing as soon as possible.

Looking rather dashing at the UEFA Champions League drawing ceremony where he collected his award for Goalkeeper of the Season, fans might be forgiven for thinking Alisson was right around the corner from returning. In fact, when paired with some of the initial comments from Jurgen Klopp after the injury occurred, it’s not an entirely unreasonable position to think we might not be long for an Alisson return.

Unfortunately, that’s not quite the case. According to Jurgen Klopp, Alisson’s injury is serious enough to warrant at least a little bit more time away.

“He [has] made steps, of course, but it was a proper injury, so it will still take time. A calf muscle is pretty important for jumping – and for a goalie, it is quite important that you can jump from time to time, so it will take time.”

No new updates on a timeline, which is another bit of a bummer for people, like me, who would love to look at a spot on the calendar and circle it.

The vagueness of it all, though, is likely the right course of action. It helps to ensure that the public aren’t necessarily clamoring for Alisson’s return with a fixed date in mind and, given the nature of rehabilitating injuries always requires some space for needing extra time, aren’t then disappointed if the date passes with no Alisson in goal.

Here’s hoping, then, that the initial comments from Klopp that the injury wouldn’t be too bad, when paired with this most recent set of comments, splits the difference and still sees us having him back within the first two matches of September.
