Simon Mignolet will not be leaving in January

Jurgen Klopp has reportedly decided to keep goalkeeper Simon Mignolet at Liverpool for the remainder of the season, according to the Echo.

Mignolet, who now deputises for Alisson Becker as the Reds’ No.2 keeper, has been the subject of interest from a host of clubs across Europe.

The Belgian lost his place to Loris Karius in January and has rarely featured for Liverpool since, even after Karius was loaned out to Besiktas during the summer for a £2.25million fee with an option to buy for £7.25million in 2020 after making two major mistakes in the Champions League final in May.

Klopp wants to keep Mignolet at Liverpool until at least the end of the season as experienced backup to Alisson, with young goalies Caoimhin Kelleher and Kamil Grabara the only other available options.

The 30-year-old was willing to take a pay-cut to join Napoli on loan in the summer but Klopp blocked the move. Since then, Mignolet’s sole appearance has been in the League Cup loss to Chelsea in September.

Prior to that, Mignolet was very open about his frustrations, claiming he found it “bizarre” that Liverpool would allow Karius to leave instead of him.

Klopp responded at the time by saying “there are worse things in the world than being number two….. if you want to tell me something then tell me directly.”

Mignolet has since kept his head down and accepted his role, but will most likely move on to pastures new next summer with a host of clubs still interested in securing his services.
